The year-end seminar is often the forgotten format of the season. Everyone talks about the party, nobody takes the time to look at the year with the team before moving on to the next. Yet it is the only moment when a whole department can take a day to say what worked, what got stuck and what changes. Done well, it makes the party lighter, because the difficult topics have already been dealt with during the day. Here is how to organise it in Paris without turning it into one more meeting.
Year-end seminar, what it is really for
A year-end seminar pursues one of these three goals, rarely all three at once.
- Reviewing the year. Sharing results, successes, failures, and what the team takes away from them.
- Setting the course. Defining next year’s priorities, involving the team rather than announcing a plan to them.
- Strengthening the team. Taking time together away from the office, especially for a team working partly remotely.
Choose one main goal. A seminar that tries to do everything in one day ends up as a string of slides, and the team leaves with nothing clear.
| Format | Duration | For whom | What works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half day and activity | 4 to 5 h | Team of 10 to 60 | Short review, workshop, closing activity |
| Full day in Paris | 7 to 8 h | Department or company of 20 to 150 | Plenary, workshops, activity then dinner |
| Countryside seminar | 2 days | Leadership committee, team of 10 to 40 | Real break, cool-headed strategy |
| Seminar then party | Afternoon and evening | Whole company | Work in the afternoon, party at night |
A typical one-day schedule in Paris
A day that works switches format every 60 to 90 minutes. Beyond that, attention drops, especially in December.
| Time | Session | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 9.30 am | Welcome and breakfast | Let everyone arrive without stress |
| 10 am | Review plenary | The year’s results, 45 minutes maximum |
| 11 am | Small-group workshops | What worked, what changes |
| 12.30 pm | Lunch | Deliberately mix the tables |
| 2 pm | Feedback and priorities | Three to five priorities for next year |
| 3.30 pm | Break | Essential before the activity |
| 4 pm | Group activity | Move, laugh, mix teams |
| 6 pm | Drinks or dinner | End the day on a social note |
The key point is the feedback session. If the workshops lead to nothing visible, the team concludes its opinion did not count. Note decisions live and send a summary within the week.
The closing activity, what makes it memorable
After a day sitting down, the late-afternoon activity is not a bonus. It is what turns a working day into a shared memory. It should be short, one hour to ninety minutes, collective and open to everyone, with no fitness level required.
Two Paris formats suit this well. Bomb Squad Paris, an action game on boulevard de Sébastopol in the 3rd, has teams of 2 to 6 play for one hour, with starts every 10 minutes allowing up to 60 participants over two hours while the others enjoy the reception area and its bar. The published price ranges from 28 to 45 euros per player depending on team size. PAN Bar Paris, a shooting bar at 6 rue de Paradis in the 10th, can be fully privatized for 30 to 150 people with a dedicated host, and lets you project a presentation, making it one of the few venues where you can chain the feedback session, the activity and dinner without changing address. Its team building package starts at 36 euros per person.
To widen the choice, our selection of the best team building activities in Paris compares twelve formats, and the sports team building in Paris guide details the ones that really get people moving.
Choosing the seminar venue
Four criteria matter more than the decor.
- Public transport access. In December, night falls around 5 pm. A venue close to a metro line keeps the team until the end.
- A plenary room and spaces for workshops. A single big room forces everyone to work in the noise.
- The equipment. Screen, sound, connection, flip charts. Get it in writing in the quote.
- The option to chain sessions. A venue that also hosts the activity or dinner avoids the end-of-day move, which always loses part of the group.
Mistakes that sink a year-end seminar
- Too much plenary. A whole morning of top-down presentations, and the afternoon is lost.
- A seminar with no follow-up. If the priorities decided do not reappear anywhere in January, next year’s seminar starts with a handicap.
- Mixing it with the party. Slipping a workshop between drinks and dinner spoils both. Keep them separate.
- The wrong date. After 15 December, attendance drops and minds are already on holiday.

The seminar is only one of the formats of the season. Our guide to the end of year at work in Paris compares the six options, and if you follow with a party, the company end-of-year party in Paris guide details the budget and planning. For the general method, our team building tips also apply to a seminar.
