A team building event is an organised moment outside the usual work setting that brings a team together around a shared activity, to strengthen cohesion, communication and mutual understanding. What sets it apart from a simple outing with colleagues is that it pursues an identified goal, for instance onboarding new hires, bonding two departments that rarely talk, or marking the end of an intense period.
In practice
- Duration: from one hour to a full day. One or two hours of activity are enough to restart a team dynamic, as long as you keep informal time afterwards.
- Budget: expect roughly 25 to 40 euros per person for a standalone activity, 50 to 80 euros with a meal or cocktail, and 100+ euros for a full day with privatisation.
- When to book: as early as possible for a weekday evening slot. In November and December, the peak season, several weeks in advance are necessary.
Team building or seminar?
A seminar is offsite work time (presentations, workshops, strategy) that may include a team building session. Team building itself is centred on the activity and the group, with no mandatory work content. Many companies combine both in a single day.
