An afterwork is a relaxed get-together with colleagues organised right after the workday, most often over drinks between 6pm and 9pm. It is the lightest team outing format to organise: no budget to approve, no programme, you just pick the venue and let everyone know.
In practice
- The right slot: Thursday is the big afterwork night in Paris, with Tuesday and Wednesday also in high demand. Many bars run a happy hour between 5pm and 8pm, with reduced prices on drinks.
- Budget: whatever you drink. During happy hour, a pint or a cocktail costs noticeably less than full price.
- Group size: beyond 8 to 10 people, better book a table or a dedicated space, especially on Thursday evenings.
Simple afterwork or activity afterwork?
The classic afterwork happens in a bar. The rising version is the afterwork in an activity bar: darts, board games, karaoke or shooting ranges, where the game acts as an icebreaker between colleagues who do not mix daily. Activity bars usually charge per lane or per booth rather than per person, which makes the formula attractive for groups.
