Laser tag and bowling are a bit like the kids menu of birthday parties. They work, everyone knows them, but nobody talks about them the next day. The good news is that Paris has a proper collection of unusual activities that keep everything that makes those classics work, team play, no skill needed, one hour flat, with the bonus “wait, what is this” effect. We kept 7, with prices, capacities and minimum ages checked on their official websites.

The right reflex, replace rather than reinvent

Laser tag and bowling work for three reasons. Everyone gets the rules in two minutes, you play as a team or against each other, and it fits into an hour. A good alternative keeps those three ingredients and only changes the experience. The table below gives you the ideal replacement depending on what your group likes about the classic.

To get moving, the alternatives to laser tag

Bomb Squad Paris, the action game that makes you forget laser tag

Bomb Squad, at 94 boulevard de Sébastopol in the 3rd, is a one hour mission in teams of 2 to 6 through a series of rooms. Floor tiles, lasers to dodge, memory and teamwork challenges, then a final bomb to defuse. You keep the physical side of laser tag and add brains and a real storyline. It is open from age 7 with an adult up to age 15, and staggered start times let up to 60 participants play over two hours.

Bomb Squad offers a birthday package from 30 euros per person, with the hour of play, a table reserved for the group for one hour, soft drinks, sweets and a souvenir photo. To understand the format, read our guide to the action game in Paris.

Virtual Room, team virtual reality

Virtual Room, at 35 boulevard Richard-Lenoir in the 11th and place de la Porte Maillot in the 17th, runs 45 minute virtual reality escape games played as a team. The standard rate is 30 euros per person, 26 euros for under 26s. For a birthday, the kids pack costs 40 euros from age 8 with a party snack, the adult pack 45 euros with drinks and snacks.

The advantage of VR is that nobody has a head start, everyone discovers it at the same time.

To raise a glass, the alternatives to bowling

PAN Bar Paris, the shooting bar that replaces bowling

PAN Bar Paris, at 6 rue de Paradis in the 10th, uses exactly the same mechanics as bowling, one booth per group, taking turns, scores on screen, but with two rifles and around ten in-house shooting games instead of pins. The booth tablet is also used to order cocktails and homemade sharing plates. Booths hold 2 to 10 people, up to 66 by booking several, from 16 euros per person for 1h30.

For a birthday, you book one or more booths privately and order a cake with candles. The bar is closed on Mondays. For more ideas in the same spirit, read our guide to alternatives to a classic bar in Paris.

Quiz Room, the TV game show for real

Quiz Room is a TV game show set with buzzers, in a private room for your group. Four venues in Paris, Bonne Nouvelle (10th), Odéon (6th), Opéra (9th) and La Villette (19th), for 3 to 54 people. Count 26 euros per person for one hour with 3 to 6 players, 24 euros with 7 to 18, and around 33 to 35 euros for 1h30 and two or three games.

It is open from age 14, with a Kids version from age 8, and you can add custom questions about the birthday person, the option that gets the biggest laughs at a party.

For the wow effect, the truly unusual activities

Wildness, axe throwing in the 13th

Wildness, at 79 rue de Patay in the 13th, offers axe throwing, with shurikens, crucifix or shovel as options. Pricing is per lane, 54 euros for two (27 euros per person) and 66 euros for three (22 euros per person), plus 5 euros per lane for the options. The venue is open Tuesday to Friday from 5pm to 10pm, Saturday from 2pm to 10pm and Sunday from 2pm to 7pm.

It is the activity that makes the biggest impression in conversation, and the lane format for two or three players suits a small group of friends well.

Les Cognées, axes and archery in the 18th

Les Cognées, at 5 rue Stephenson in the 18th, also offers axe throwing, from 19 to 27 euros per person depending on the number of players per target, and archery from 25 to 35 euros. The venue is open Friday from 4pm to 10pm, Saturday from 11am to 10pm and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm.

It is the cheapest option on the list when there are several of you per target.

Cinévasion, the murder mystery with a real actor

Cinévasion, in the 15th, runs a one hour introductory murder mystery led by a professional actor, for 6 to 8 players, from 28 euros per person. The venue also has escape games, karaoke and a cinema room, with a private party room as an option. Our piece on the murder mystery party in Paris explains how a game works.

Choosing without getting it wrong

Three questions are enough. Who is the youngest in the group, because the minimum age quickly rules out some options. How many of you there are, because a murder mystery caps at 8 while the action game or the quiz go beyond 50. And whether the group wants to eat and drink on site, in which case an activity bar like PAN Bar Paris saves you changing venues.

For booking, allow two to three weeks for a Saturday, a month during school holidays. For teens, our teen birthday party in Paris selection covers supervision rules, and for adults, the adult birthday party in Paris guide compares activity bars.

Frequently asked questions

What birthday activity beats laser tag and bowling?
The best alternatives keep the idea of team play over a short slot. The action game replaces laser tag very well for a group that wants to move, the shooting bar replaces bowling for adults who also want to eat and drink, and axe throwing or a TV-style quiz bring the unusual touch. Virtual reality and murder mystery parties round things off for calmer groups.
Where to have an original birthday party in Paris?
Paris has several activities you will not find everywhere. Bomb Squad runs an action game in the 3rd, PAN Bar Paris a shooting bar in the 10th, Quiz Room a TV-style quiz in four neighbourhoods, Wildness and Les Cognées axe throwing in the 13th and 18th, Cinévasion a murder mystery with an actor in the 15th, and Virtual Room virtual reality escape games in the 11th and 17th.
How much does an unusual birthday party cost in Paris?
Count between 19 and 34 euros per person for one hour of unusual activity. Axe throwing starts at 19 euros per person at Les Cognées, the TV quiz at 24 euros, the shooting bar at 16 euros for 1h30, and all-inclusive birthday packages, like Bomb Squad’s, start at 30 euros per person.
What original activity works for a kids birthday in Paris?
For kids, the action game is open from age 7 with an adult, virtual reality from age 8, and Quiz Room has a Kids version from age 8. The shooting bar game is open from age 16, with an adult for under 18s, and for axe throwing, check the minimum age directly with the venue.
What is the most unusual birthday activity in Paris?
It depends on the group, but two formats are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The shooting bar at PAN Bar Paris, where you aim at virtual targets with a rifle from a private booth while ordering cocktails, and Bomb Squad’s action game, a course of physical challenges that ends with defusing a bomb. Axe throwing comes just behind for the surprise effect.
