Searching for an original activity in Paris means hitting three hundred ideas in ten minutes and being no further along. The real issue is not the list, it is the filtering. Here are the four criteria that decide for you, and the families of formats they lead to.
Why lists of ideas don’t help
A list sorts by theme, but your problem is not thematic. You are not looking for a category, you are looking for an outing that works for this specific group, on this date, with this budget.
That is why the same activity can be a great memory for six friends and an awkward evening for a team that meets three times a year. The format has not changed, the group has.
The four criteria that decide
Answer these before opening a single booking site.
How many of you there are. Under six, everything is open. Between six and twenty, you need a venue that bills by booth, by lane or by time slot, otherwise the group splits. Above twenty, the real question becomes privatisation, and that is handled by quote.
How much exposure is acceptable. This is the decisive criterion, and the only one nobody thinks about. Some formats put one person in front of the others, some play in teams or in turns. One reluctant person is enough to change the mood of the whole evening.
The all-in budget per person. The advertised price is almost never the final price. The activity first, then the drinks, included here and extra there.
Food. A proper meal on site avoids the 9pm move, the one that always loses two or three people along the way and kills the momentum.
The families of formats, and who they suit
| Family | Ideal group | Exposure | Food on site | Indicative budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Team action game | 2 to 6 per team, more with staggered starts | Low | No | €28 to €45 |
| Activity bar | 2 to 10 per booth | Low | Yes | From €16 |
| Investigation game or murder mystery | 8 to 30 | Medium, everyone has a role | Depends on the package | €25 to €45 |
| Creative or cooking workshop | 4 to 15 | None | What you cook | Varies |
| Immersive experience | 2 to 10 | None | No | Varies |
| Stage format, karaoke | 4 to 30 | High | Often | By booth, by the hour |
Read this table from right to left. Start with the exposure and food columns, they are what rules options out, not the theme of the activity.
What original actually means
Three misunderstandings come up every time.
Original does not mean extreme. High-adrenaline formats rule out part of the group, usually the part that will not say so until they are standing in the venue. A good original activity surprises without putting anyone in difficulty.
Original does not mean complicated. The outings people remember almost always have a simple structure, one venue, one slot, a stated duration. Two-part plans across two neighbourhoods lose people in transit.
Original does not mean expensive. The price per person depends mostly on the billing model. A venue that bills by space becomes very reasonable once you are numerous, a venue that bills per head does not move.
Two concrete Paris examples
To make this tangible, two addresses that each illustrate a different billing model.
The action game is played in teams, on a timed course of challenges. Inside Paris, Bomb Squad runs it on boulevard de Sébastopol in the 3rd arrondissement, in teams of 2 to 6 players for one hour of play, with staggered start times that let up to 60 participants go through over a two hour window. The rate is degressive, from 45 euros per player for two down to 28 euros for six, and it is open from age 7 with an adult. This is the textbook low-exposure format for mixed groups.
The activity bar adds bar service and food on site. PAN Bar, a shooting bar in the 10th arrondissement, works with booths of 2 to 10 people from 16 euros per person, up to 66 players across several booths, and privatises its 400 square metres from 30 people upwards. It is closed on Mondays. This is the textbook format billed by space, where the price per head drops as the group grows.

When to book, by format
Lead times vary enormously from one family to another, which is good news when you are running late.
Formats with staggered start times keep slots until a few days out, because they run several groups across the same window. Formats that block a whole space for an evening go two to four weeks ahead, more in November and December when corporate parties fill the calendar.
Either way, Sunday and the start of the week remain the most available and often the cheapest slots, for exactly the same activity.
The recurring mistakes
- Choosing the activity before counting the group. The final headcount determines which formats are eligible, not the other way round.
- Forgetting to ask about simultaneous capacity. A venue advertising 60 people often takes them in waves, not all at once.
- Stacking two plans in one evening. It only works if the two venues are less than fifteen minutes apart.
- Taking the cheapest package without reading what it includes. The gap between two similar rates is almost always in the drinks.
