December 31 has a problem no other night of the year has, everyone wants to go out on the same evening, and the best venues know it. The result, prices climb, tables get booked from mid November, and plenty of groups end up improvising a plan at the last minute that costs more and delivers less. Here are the formats that actually work for New Year’s Eve in Paris with friends, what they really cost, and when you need to book.

The families of plans for December 31

Everything happening in Paris on New Year’s Eve fits into one of these four boxes.

The club or dance party, in a venue, on a barge or on a rooftop. This is the format that delivers the most energy and the longest queue outside in the cold, and entry almost always costs more than on a normal Saturday.

Dinner, at a restaurant, on a Seine cruise or at a cabaret. The most complete format, often with entertainment or a show included, and the one that needs booking the earliest.

The group activity, done together before the party. Action game, shooting bar, board game bar, escape room. Nobody needs to book a table, the price is known in advance, and the group stays together from start to finish.

The night in, with friends, everyone bringing a dish or a bottle. The cheapest format, and the only one that needs no booking at all.

Every other idea you will come across elsewhere is a variation on these four.

Going out to a club, a cruise or a restaurant

A rooftop stays a safe bet for watching the sky light up at midnight without leaving the comfort of a bar. Our selection of rooftop bars in Paris lists the terraces that run a special New Year’s Eve night most years, worth checking directly with each venue from autumn onwards.

The Seine cruise stays the most requested format for a group that wants to have dinner and enjoy the view at once, passing the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame lit up at the moment of the countdown. Spots sell fast, plan to book from mid November for the best packages, and a little later for the simpler time slots.

The free show held every year by the City of Paris on the avenue des Champs-Élysées stays the easiest event to plan with no booking at all. A video projection is shown on the Arc de Triomphe late in the evening, followed by fireworks at midnight. Crowds are very large, so it is worth arriving several hours early to find a decent spot.

The group activity, the smart move before midnight

For a group that would rather skip table bookings and dress codes, an activity before the party solves the problem in one go, a known price in advance, and a start to the evening with real content instead of waiting for midnight over a drink.

The action game is the format best suited to large, mixed groups. Inside Paris, Bomb Squad runs this format on boulevard de Sébastopol in the 3rd arrondissement, in teams of 2 to 6 players for one hour of play, with staggered start times that let up to 60 participants go through over a two hour window. The rate is degressive, from 45 euros per player for two down to 28 euros for six, and the activity is open from age 7 with an adult.

The shooting bar plays on the same register of adrenaline, with food and drinks on site as well. PAN Bar, in the 10th arrondissement, works with booths of 2 to 10 people from 16 euros per person, up to 66 players across several booths, and privatises its 400 square metres from 30 people upwards. Note that the venue is closed on Mondays, worth checking if your party falls on that day depending on the calendar.

For a group looking for something else, our overview of unusual activities in Paris and our guide to Halloween in Paris cover other themed party formats that work the same way all year round.

Staying in with friends

This is the most underrated option, and yet the least risky one. No booking to lose, no dress code, and a budget that comes down to the price of the shopping, generally a few tens of euros per person if the meal is shared among the group.

The one thing to sort out ahead of time is the flat. An apartment that fits ten people is not something you find on the evening of December 30 if the group is larger than six or seven. Also plan for the midnight walk, a stroll along the Seine or up the Montmartre hill works well to extend the evening without heading to a club.

New Year’s Eve with colleagues, a different evening

December 31 itself stays a private night, with friends or family. The office version happens earlier in the month, as an end of year party held before the Christmas break. Our guide to organising a company end of year party in Paris breaks down the budget tiers by team size, and the same logic applies to a longer than usual after-work.

When to book, and the mistakes to avoid

The calendar drives everything. For a cruise, a cabaret or a restaurant with entertainment, plan to book from mid November to have a choice of packages, and by early December at the latest for the remaining tables. For a group activity that runs on time slots, three to four weeks is usually enough, since the number of sessions per evening is limited but less tight than dinner tables.

The mistakes that come back every year.

  • Booking a table without reading the package in detail. Some venues impose a single set menu and a minimum spend on December 31.
  • Planning a cruise or a cabaret without checking the finish time. An evening that ends at 2am in an out of the way spot ends in a shared taxi at a higher fare.
  • Choosing an expensive format for a group that has not confirmed attendance. Deposits for New Year’s Eve are rarely refunded if someone drops out.
  • Forgetting the midnight transport. Public transport runs on a special schedule on December 31, check it before booking somewhere far from home.

Prices, capacities and opening hours checked on the venues’ official websites in September 2026. Programming and prices for December 31 change every year, check them with each venue before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you go for New Year's Eve in Paris with friends?
Four options cover most needs. The club or dance party if the goal is dancing all night, dinner at a restaurant or on a Seine cruise if the group wants a proper meal with a view of the monuments, a group activity such as an action game or a shooting bar before heading out, and a night in if the budget is tight. The city also runs a free show on the avenue des Champs-Élysées every year, open to everyone with no booking needed.
How much does a New Year's Eve night out in Paris cost?
The budget varies a lot depending on the format. Club entry that costs 15 to 30 euros on a normal Saturday often climbs to 40 or 90 euros on December 31. A restaurant dinner with entertainment starts around 80 euros per person, a Seine dinner cruise usually runs between 90 and 250 euros, and a cabaret dinner show frequently goes above 200 euros. A group activity stays in a lower range, between 16 and 45 euros depending on the format.
Do you need to book long ahead for New Year's Eve in Paris?
Yes, earlier than for any other night of the year. Cruises, cabarets and restaurants with entertainment sell out for their best packages from mid November, sometimes even earlier for the most requested tables. Group activities that run on time slots or private booths, shooting bars, action games, escape rooms, should be booked at least three to four weeks ahead, since the number of sessions per evening is limited.
What can you do for free in Paris on New Year's Eve?
The best known free event stays the show held every December 31 on the avenue des Champs-Élysées, with a video projection on the Arc de Triomphe followed by fireworks at midnight. No booking is needed, but plan to arrive several hours before midnight to get a good spot, since the crowds are very large. A night walk along the Seine or up to Montmartre is a quieter and free alternative.
How do you celebrate New Year's Eve in Paris with colleagues?
December 31 itself stays a private night, with friends or family. The office version happens earlier in the month, as an end of year party held before the Christmas break. The format that works follows the same pattern as an after-work, a one hour to ninety minute activity followed by free time at the bar, avoiding formats that put one person on the spot in front of the group.
Where can you watch the New Year's fireworks in Paris?
The simplest viewpoint stays the avenue des Champs-Élysées and the area around the Arc de Triomphe, where the official City of Paris show takes place at midnight. The banks of the Seine and the hills of Montmartre offer a clear view of the Paris sky with smaller crowds. For a group that wants to stay warm, a Seine cruise or a rooftop terrace lets you watch the sky light up without queuing in the cold.
