The murder mystery party is the format that divides groups the most, which is exactly why you should understand how it works before booking. A crime, a cast of characters, a pile of secrets, and two hours to unmask the culprit. Here is what actually happens, what it costs, and how to choose between the three formats available in Paris.
What it is, and what it isn’t
A murder mystery party is a live role-playing game built around a criminal investigation. Each participant plays a character with an identity, a backstory, secrets and personal objectives, sometimes incompatible with everyone else’s. The collective goal is to find the culprit, but each player also pursues their own agenda.
So it is not an escape room, even though the two often end up in the same bracket. In an escape room, everyone chases the same goal against a clock and the puzzles settle it. In a murder mystery, the other players are the game, not the mechanics.
It is not a giant game of Cluedo either, even though the comparison comes up constantly. Cluedo is a deduction game with hidden information, a murder mystery is a game of performance, negotiation and bluff.
How the evening runs, in four stages
Nearly every scenario follows the same arc, whoever the provider is.
Welcome and rules. An actor or game master sets the frame, explains what is allowed and what is not, and sets the tone. Allow a good fifteen minutes.
The setup. The context of the crime is presented, often theatrically. This is the moment the group steps into the fiction.
Handing out the roles. Each player gets their character sheet, with their identity, their relationships with the others, their secrets and their objectives. It is the document that makes the whole game, and the one people read too quickly.
Free play. The heart of the evening, between one and two hours. You move around, question people, trade information, lie a little, form alliances. Then comes the resolution, the reveal, and the debrief where everyone explains what they were hiding. That is often the best part.
The three formats available in Paris
| Format | Group | Duration | Budget per person | What it requires |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| At a dedicated venue | Usually 8 to 12, sometimes 2 to 30 | 90 min to 2h | €25 to €45 | Booking, turning up |
| At home with a provider | 8 to 30 | Around 3h, often over a meal | Flat fee, by quote | A space, the food |
| Kit, run by you | 6 to 15 | 2h to 3h | The price of the kit | An hour of prep |
The venue format is the simplest, everything is handled and the evening has a clean start and finish. The at-home format produces the best atmosphere because it unfolds over a meal, but someone has to handle the logistics. The kit is the cheapest and most flexible, as long as you accept that one person in the group will spend the evening running it rather than playing.
The criterion that really decides, exposure
This is the point to settle before anything else. The murder mystery is the most exposing of all Paris group game formats. Everyone has to speak in front of the others, hold a character, sometimes lie to the face of people they barely know.
For a group of friends who enjoy winding each other up, that is fuel. For a group that has just formed, for a team mixing very different levels of seniority, or when several guests are genuinely shy, it is a gamble.
The test is simple. If you picture the evening and two or three faces come to mind with the thought that they will hate it, pick a team format rather than an individual-role format. An action game or a board game bar produces the same group energy without putting anyone on stage.
How to pick your scenario
Three things matter, and none of them is the theme.
The number of roles. A scenario is written for a precise cast. Too few players and key roles vanish, too many and some end up with an empty sheet. Give your final headcount when booking, not an estimate.
The level of acting expected. Some scenarios ask for real performance, others are happy with conversation. The latter suit mixed or first-time groups better.
The real duration. A session advertised at two hours rarely starts on time with a group of twelve. Leave room in your evening, especially if you have booked a restaurant afterwards.
For a team building event
The format is in high demand with companies, and it works well for a close-knit team looking for a memorable evening. Two caveats worth keeping in mind.
It reveals a lot about the dynamics inside a team, which is an asset in a healthy group and a risk in a tense one. And it is not egalitarian, characters do not all get the same speaking time or the same weight in the plot.
If the goal is to get the team working together rather than against each other, a cooperative format is a better fit. Our guide to organising a team building event breaks down budget tiers and formats by team size.
Neighbouring formats, if this one isn’t right
- The action game, a timed team course of challenges, with no individual speaking. In Paris, Bomb Squad runs it on boulevard de Sébastopol in the 3rd arrondissement, in teams of 2 to 6 players for one hour, from 45 euros per player for two down to 28 euros for six, open from age 7 with an adult.
- The escape room, cooperative and puzzle-based, for groups who would rather think together. Our pick of the best escape games in Paris covers the rooms and their difficulty levels.
- The activity bar, when the point is mostly a good evening together with food on site. PAN Bar, a shooting bar in the 10th arrondissement, works with booths of 2 to 10 people from 16 euros per person, up to 66 players across several booths, closed on Mondays.
For a birthday, the murder mystery is one of our original birthday ideas in Paris, alongside axe throwing, the TV-style quiz and the shooting bar.
When to book
Venue-based murder mysteries run few sessions per week, because they tie up an actor and a whole room for a single group. Allow two to four weeks, more for a Saturday night or for the November and December period.
For the at-home format the provider constraint is the same, plus the question of your own space. The kit is the only version you can decide on a few days out.
